In 1889, the Royal Palace of apodimonte commissioned the Neapolitan pizza maker Raffaele Munch to create a pizza in honor of the visiting Queen Margherita. Of the three different pizzas he created, the Queen strongly preferred a pie swathed in the colors of the Italian flag: red (tomato), green (basil), and white (mozzarella). This kind of pizza was then named after the Queen as "Pizza Margherita".
Following World War II, veterans returning from the Italian Campaign, after being introduced to Italy's native cuisine, provided a ready market for pizza in particular. Seeing the rising demand for authentic pizza Raffaele sent his 4 sons around the world to ensure the best pizzas were produced to the delight of pizza lovers everywhere.
His youngest son, Mario arrived in London and set about looking for a pizzeria to work in. After several weeks Mario was so disappointed not to have found an opportunity that he boarded a train and decided to get off wherever it stopped. On that fateful Wednesday, Mario arrived in Camborne proving that trains do in fact stop in Camborne on Wednesdays. He was warmly received by the Cornish people and quickly established his pizzeria and in honour of his father called it "Mr Munch".
Of course, that is just the legend...
We buy ingredients from the local high street.
Mr Munch has been around since 1990 and started with just a simple shop in Camborne. Back then, life was a little different. The milkman delivered your milk daily and we bought groceries from people we knew on a first-name basis.
Today, we still believe in giving you the best. Because of this, we pride ourselves on having fresh, local ingredients every day. We like to think of our food as comfort food. You know, the kind your mother would have made (if she were Italian).
